Abstract

Belief in the Hereafter constitutes a fundamental pillar of Islamic faith and serves as a cornerstone for moral accountability and social justice. The Qurʾān repeatedly emphasizes that worldly life is a temporary trial, during which human beings are tested through their beliefs and actions. Based on this trial, individuals will be held accountable on the Day of Judgment, where divine justice will be fully manifested through reward and punishment. In order to cultivate moral consciousness and deter humanity from sin and corruption, the Qurʾān vividly describes the realities of the Hereafter, particularly the punishment of Hell. It presents Hell not merely as a place of torment but as a structured reality comprising multiple levels, each designated for specific categories of disbelief, hypocrisy, and moral transgression. The Qurʾān refers to these levels through distinct names, each carrying profound semantic and theological implications. This study undertakes a semantic and analytical examination of the seven levels of Hell as mentioned in the Qurʾān. By analyzing their linguistic roots, contextual usage, and theological meanings, the research aims to highlight how Qurʾānic discourse employs powerful imagery and language to instill moral awareness, strengthen faith, and guide human behavior toward righteousness.
