“Understanding the Concept of Qalb: An Analytical Examination of Selected Urdu Commentaries on Sahih al-Bukhari”

Abstract

The concept of Qalb (heart) occupies a profound position in Islamic scholarship, often regarded as the core of human spirituality, morality, and intellectual orientation. This research examines the meaning and interpretation of Qalb in the light of selected Urdu commentaries on Sahih al-Bukhari. The study aims to highlight how classical and modern scholars have explained the heart not only as a biological organ but as the locus of faith, intention, and inner transformation. Through analytical engagement with renowned Urdu exegeses, the research identifies the various dimensions of Qalb—including its connection with belief, sincerity, and ethical behaviour. Additionally, the paper explores synonymous terms used for the heart within the Hadith corpus, thereby offering insights into its linguistic and spiritual richness. The findings demonstrate that the concept of Qalb provides a holistic framework for understanding the relationship between inner purity and outward actions. By revisiting the interpretations of eminent Urdu scholars, this study reaffirms the enduring relevance of the heart as a guiding principle for Muslim thought, character formation, and spiritual development in contemporary times.
