Abstract

The emergence and widespread use of credit cards have revolutionized modern financial transactions, becoming an indispensable tool for consumers and businesses worldwide. However, their usage has also sparked significant debate within Islamic jurisprudence, as conventional credit card structures often conflict with Shariah principles, particularly concerning riba (usury), gharar (excessive uncertainty), and unethical financial practices. This paper offers a comprehensive review of the opinions and rulings issued by leading Fiqh academies and Islamic legal scholars regarding credit cards.

The study delves into the critical issues surrounding conventional credit cards and their incompatibility with Islamic finance. It also examines the development and approval of Shariah-compliant credit card alternatives that aim to address these challenges. By analyzing the methodologies and reasoning employed by various Islamic jurisprudential bodies, including their divergent and convergent perspectives, the paper highlights the evolving nature of Islamic financial jurisprudence in addressing contemporary economic realities.

The research provides a nuanced understanding of the ethical and legal considerations underlying the acceptance or prohibition of credit cards in the Islamic financial system. It aims to offer practical insights for Islamic financial institutions, scholars, and consumers seeking Shariah-compliant solutions in an increasingly globalized financial landscape. The findings underscore the critical role of Islamic legal institutions in shaping financial practices that align with both ethical principles and modern economic demands.
