Abstract

This paper seeks to understand the work and contribution of Maulana Abul Mahasin Sayyid Muhammad Sajjad (1883-1940). Maulana Abul Mahasin was particularly disillusioned by the erosion of Muslim system of administration of justice. in the colonial period. He responded seriously and passionately to this predicament. Hailing from a village near Patna in Bihar, He became an active member of Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind and founder of Jamiat Ulama-e-Bihar. He wrote letters to ulama and urged them to unite and act to counter and resist this state of Jahiliyah, in which there is no legal order governing the lives of Indian Muslims. Appointment of a Wali (Muslim guardian), according to Abul Mahasin was obligatory for ulama. Ulama will be accountable, he reminds them, if they do not act to create nizam-e-Shari. He founded a Dar-ul-Qada in Bihar in 1921 which was the first step towards creating Imarat-e-Shariah (Shariah based governance). This paper discuses the ideas as well as the instituations built by Maulana Abul Mahasin Sayyid Muhammad Sajjad.
