Essential Social and Artistic Issues in Sahar Khalifeh’s Novel “Al-Sabbar”

الملخص

Fiction writing is an important and popular branch of literature that has now become the most distinguished and prominent mode of literary expression. Fiction writing emerged and developed in Palestinian literature during the twentieth century, and the novels of this era were affected by the socio-political turmoil. Due to the scarcity of literary works dealing with Palestinian women writers, I decided to make an objective study of the novel “Al-Sabbar” (Wild thorns) written by Palestinian writer Sahar Khalifeh. The main objective of this study was to make the readers aware of the true and comprehensive picture of Palestinian society together with the social problems faced by them during the turmoil of the revolutionary period of the country. The writer in her novel deals directly with a number of issues that concern the life of Palestinian people under Israeli occupation, such as Palestinian workers and their problems, poverty, social restrictions, familial issues, moral decay, Resistance within the occupied territory, women issues and the role of women in the national struggle. Narration style of the writer is very fascinating and captivating. She employs different stylistic and descriptive techniques to make her work worth reading.
