Free Verse Poetry in Iraq and Among the Émigré Poets (A Literary Comparison)

الملخص

This study explores the development of free verse poetry in Iraq and among Arab émigré poets, with a focus on the similarities and differences between the two literary movements. It examines the historical, cultural, and social factors that contributed to the rise of free verse, highlighting the role of Iraqi pioneers such as Badr Shakir al-Sayyab and Nazik al-Malaika, alongside the contributions of the Mahjar poets in North and South America. The research adopts a comparative literary approach, analyzing themes, stylistic features, and poetic techniques to reveal how both groups sought to renew Arabic poetry, break away from rigid classical forms, and express modern human concerns. The study concludes that, while the Iraqi school was more experimental in rhythm and structure, the émigré poets placed greater emphasis on spiritual exile, cultural identity, and universal humanism.
