Abstract

Allama Shabbir Ahmad Usmani was an Islamic scholar, who supported the Pakistan Movement. He was a theologian, writer, orator, politician and expert in Tafseer and Hadith. He also known as “Sheikh-Ul-Islam”, “Al-Usmani”, “Al-Deobandi”, “Al-Qasmi” and “Al-Ashrafi”. He was educated at Darul-Uloom Deoband and graduated in 1908. After his graduation, he was appointed as a teacher at Darul-Uloom Deoband. In 1915, he started to teach “Sahih-al- Muslim”, a book of teachings of Holy prophet (PBUH). After that he taught at Jamia Fatahpur Dehli. In 1926, he moved to Dabhel and became a teacher at Jamia Islamia Dabhel. After the death of Anwar Shah Kashmiri, he started to teach “Sahih-al-Bukhari” a book of teachings by Holy prophet (PBUH). He was the founder member of “Jamia Millia Islamia” New Dehli. He was one of the Deobandis who supported the creation of Pakistan. In 1944, he joined the Muslim League. He founded the “Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam”. After the partition of subcontinent, he became a member of Constituent Assembly of Pakistan and remained member till his death. He is best remembered for having spearheaded the Objective Resolution (Qarardad-e-Maqasid), which was passed by the Constituent Assembly on March 12, 1949. Allama Shabbir Ahmad Usmani died at Baghdadul Jadid in Bahawalpur State on December 13, 1949 and was buried at Islamia College Karachi. He was awarded with the honorary degree of Ph.D from present Governor of Punjab Sardar Abdul Rab Nishtar. This article deals with the biography and services of Allama Shabbir Ahmad Usmani.
