Maulana maududi and the comprehension of Hadith, An analytical study in the perspective of Tafheem ul Quran

Abstract

There are two fundamentals of Islam, one is Quran and the other is Hadith. The Quran has come to us in its absolute form and with broad authentication. On the other hand, the ahadith are mostly individual reports and they sometimes lack broad authentication. That is why Islamic scholars assess the strength and weakness of hadith in two ways: one is related to the chain of narrators while another is related to the comprehension of hadith. The one, related to the chain of narrators is termed as Riwayat al hadith (chain of narrators) and the one, related to the understanding of hadith is termed as dirayat al hadith (Comprehension of Hadith). As through the principles of "Dirayat al hadith", a hadith can be rejected similarly through the principles of "Riwayat al hadith" also a hadith can be rejected. In dirayat al hadith the hadith is rejected when it is against Quranic injunctions, the law of sharia and the common sense. Maulana maududi is a great islamic scholar and he also has analyzed some ahadith in his exegesis (Tafheem ul Quran) keeping in view the principles of Dirayat, he has rejected some of the ahadith which were strong with respect to the chain of narrators but when it came to The principles of Dirayat, they lacked strength. In the following article the methodology of Maulana maududi is critically analyzed.
