This research critically examines the depiction and discourse of Judeo-Christian elements in Surah Al-Baqarah through the interpretive lens of Tafheem-ul-Quran authored by Syed Abul A‘la Maududi. The study investigates how the Qur’anic narrative engages with Jewish and Christian beliefs, practices, deviations, and historical attitudes, and how these are interpreted and contextualized by Maududi in his exegetical framework. The objective is to analyze the thematic, theological, and socio-political dimensions of the Judeo-Christian discourse in Surah Al-Baqarah and assess Maududi’s hermeneutic methodology, language, and ideological orientation in addressing them.
The study begins with a conceptual framework on interfaith references in the Qur'an, followed by a detailed exegesis of the relevant verses (particularly verses 40–141), where Jews and Christians are directly or indirectly addressed. The research identifies how Maududi critiques the theological distortions, scriptural alterations, and moral failings attributed to Bani Israel, while also emphasizing the Qur’an’s call to monotheism, obedience, and reform. Furthermore, the research analyzes Maududi’s socio-political undertones, especially his critique of Western secularism and Zionism, which influence his interpretation of Judeo-Christian themes.
Methodologically, the study is qualitative and analytical, drawing from classical and modern tafsir literature for comparison, and evaluates Maududi’s contribution in constructing a politically aware and ideologically coherent tafsir narrative. The findings suggest that Tafheem-ul-Quran not only provides a theological critique of Judeo-Christian traditions but also reflects Maududi’s broader Islamic revivalist vision.
This research contributes to Qur’anic studies by offering a focused exegetical case study, and to interfaith discourse by contextualizing Qur’anic polemics through a modern interpretive lens. It also adds to the scholarship on Maududi by highlighting his role in shaping contemporary Muslim understanding of non-Muslim Abrahamic faiths.
