The Impact of the Translator's Linguistic and Cultural Competence on the Quality of Literary Translation

The translator is considered one of the most important and influential element in the development of modern Arabic literature, as his role is not restricted to mere linguistic transfer, rather he became prominent tool for transferring ideas, concepts and new visions that assisted to reshaping the culture and literary structure in the Arab world. It is significant that literary translation is closely connected to the translator's competence in both language and culture. As the translator who combines linguistic and cultural proficiency is highly expected to present the text in a way that reflects its spirit and essence, giving a new viability in the target language without losing its original identity.
In this context, the translator plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between two cultures and two languages. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the quality of translation and the competence of the translator regarding to stylistic beauty, accuracy and highlighting the special features of literary translation. In addition, it aims to show the effect of the translator's literary personality and his capability to convey the text reliably and ingeniously. The literary text needs precision in its work because it demands the accuracy of expressions, wide imagination, good command of the genre and author's voice. Thus the translator's competence is related to a board general culture in various fields.
